Welcome and Introductions, Words to Lead By, Introduce NBSI Faculty and K12 Staff, Guest Speakers 35 min
Fact or Fiction? Divide strips into two piles at tables. Use ppt to dispel myths - talk about how these myths will perpetuate themselves if you don't have resources outside of your regular go to people.
Myths and rumors become self perpetuating at an even greater level when you go to seek help online. Talk about Online Support: Forums- Skeptical consumers- Call 1800 22 TEACH 25 min
Overview of Support: Who is AZ K12, How partners connect, overview of all support: Overview of NB Candidate Support: Face to Face Support: Large and Small Group Schedules, Candidate Working Retreat30 min
Getting Acquainted Activity will allow people to seek out those people outside that circle. Activity: Rock Around the Clock- or Dancing with the NBC Stars- Mingle around the room and find 4 people you do not know and not at your table- Its all about the presentation here! To eliminate groaning... "Pretend you've known this person for 10 years..." etc.
Understand the face-to-face and online support that is available and how to access it when needed.
Develop an awareness of the Arizona K-12 Center and its vision for supporting and developing educational leaders.
Clarify and validate individual purpose for pursuing National Board, and how it relates to the larger purpose for improving educational practices for student performance.
Provide a direction for our work that is purposeful and meaningful, reducing the anxiety that accompanies embarking on this process.
Registration: Wordle while waiting for General Session to start.

4. Fact or Fiction for running powerpoint or on cards for discussion at tables NEED YOUR IDEAS HERE PLEASE!" These came from the Participant Guidebook from Facilitation Training.. many of you have it too.
Only use 10 statements. Participants will sort at tables for 7-8 min. Then a group check on slides for 6-7 min.
Fact or Fiction? It is really important that my videotape be just right, therefore, I need to keep taping lessons until I have the perfect videotape. FICTION. The video you choose should reflect the reality of your classroom. NBPTS is not looking for the perfect class; assessors are focused on your description of the class, the goals, and how you adjust when something does not go seamlessly. Note: Be aware that the NBPTS has received complaints from parent who question this process when their students are subjected to "learning" the same lesson over and over again.
I need to spend time developing brand new units and lessons to fit the portfolio entries perfectly. FICTION. Some adjustments or revisions may be needed, but there is no need to build brand new ones. National Board Certification is about a teacher presenting the reality of his/her teaching practice.
If I don't have high tech videotaping equipment, I will be at a disadvantage. FICTION. The main goal is to make sure that as much of the conversation as possible can be heard, and as many of the students (and the candidate) can be seen. As long as the equipment allows this, there should be no problem. Assessors are not looking for an award-winning film.

9. Overview of National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
Handout "Backgrounder" from NBPTS
Show Promotional DVD
KATHY DO YOU HAVE A PRESENTATION OF SOME SORT AROUND THE HISTORY AND GROWTH OF NB IN ARIZONA??
10. "Seeing the Big Picture" (modified from Foster Walsh,WA)- Read Seven Blind Mice, (I have the big book, if we need it - Jen R) a story about gaining wisdom in seeing the whole as opposed to the individual parts. Using concepts from Understanding by Design (Wiggins and McTighe) emphasize the "enduring understandings" of National Board. Beyond what candidates need to know about the process and skills needed to become certified, there is a bigger picture or mission behind the National Board process. The mission of the NBPTS is improved practice that leads to increased student achievement. This means that for candidates, certification should be secondary to the increased professional empowerment teachers feel when their teaching is solid and supported by evidence and based on high and rigorous teaching standards. Candidates should work hard to improve their practice and in the process recognize and document accomplished teaching. Certification will likely be a consequence of the deep thinking that takes place. When engaged in deep thinking, we are thinking about the ultimate outcome that will have the greatest impact for the longest amount of time... not just scoring well on the entries.
Ways we can begin to think long term:
scoring well--------vs. learning
getting easy answers-----vs. asking good questions
certifying---------vs. practice
immediate-------vs. through a meaningful process
12. Overview of the week- go over agendas and what to expect over the next four days.
